Many people ask my brother Hussain and me why we would visit Iraq when it has seen so much war and political instability. We are often told how unsafe it is to travel there, but some areas are much safer than others. You need to know where to go and have trustworthy people who can make sure you travel safely. For us, it was worth it to see for ourselves how friendly and welcoming the people of Iraq are. Like anyone else, they just want to live their lives in peace and raise their families.
Iraq is an ancient land, important in the history of Islam, Judaism and Christianity, with many wonderful places to visit. One ancient city you have probably heard of is Babylon, in the region known as Mesopotamia. It sits right by the Euphrates River and has many archaeological sites.
Basra has beautiful palm trees and gardens. It also has modern bridges and buildings with restaurants and stores like anywhere else, as well as traditional outdoor markets and a huge modern mall. The city of Erbil, in the north, is also popular with visitors.
The people we met were kind and friendly, with many different tribal cultures. They have many traditions, including warding off bad luck and inviting others to eat with them. Many meals are shared while sitting on the floor, and there is fresh flatbread at every meal. We hope to go again someday.
